Is bleach safe to use when cleaning up mold?

Biocides are compounds with the ability to kill living organisms. The use of a chemical or biocide that kills organisms like mold (for example, chlorine bleach) as a common practice during mold remediation is not suggested. Yet, there may be times when expert judgment is required (for example, when immune-compromised individuals are present). Most of the time, sterilizing a place is not possible nor desired; a background level of mold spores will remain – these spores will not develop if the moisture problem has been rectified. If you prefer to apply disinfectants or biocides, make sure to ventilate the space and exhaust the air outside. Never combine chlorine bleach solution with other ammonia-containing cleaning solutions or detergents, since hazardous fumes may result.

Please keep in mind that even dead mold can trigger allergic reactions in some people, so simply killing the mold is not enough; it must also be removed.
